Myanmar: Time Capsule (Part I)

Out of many places i've been, i think myanmar or burma land, has captured my heart in so many reasons.
Thorough some circumstances, started from applying a visa, difficulties in getting a reply for a room booking and transportation infos, it made me almost gave up on preparing the itineraries.

As this country was under military power (khmer) decades ago, the government policy is yet to widely open for international tourists. Thus, most of bookings must go through a certified travel agent who get the gov license, else it is illegal.

Internet connection in burma, is rather unreliable and limited across the country. Hence, most of online bookings which available are for hotels and the cheapest rate for a night stay is either too expensive or not reasonable compared to poor/basic accomodation provided.

I wasted almost a month of emailing the guesthouses (cheaper stay), or thru middle persons who are in charged, to make a reservation. Believed me, none of them replied. Unless, we walked in or make a phone call to them directly. From my reading, it is advisable to make a booking in advance during peak season which falls between december to february (winter season).

In burma, the weather is so hot and dry. during winter season, It can reached over 30degree celcius during a day, and temperature will drop as low as 4-5degree celcius at night, till dawn. In certain places, such in Bagan, it is more dusty as like a desert sands.

Do you know, there are 3types of main transportation that connecting the cities in burma; train, bus and domestic flight. Train and intercity bus journey could take up at least 8hrs. The domestic flight is too expensive, though for the shortest route (which take an hour journey) will cost us usd80 per way. Also, the flight schedules can be retime or cancel at last minute.

Just imagined, to travel from 1 city to another took us an overnight journey. It was tiring! Plus, it is depending on bus condition. I was lucky, my 1st bus was in good with air-condition, comfy seat and spaces, and even been provided with toilettries (tooth brush, paste and wet tissues), pillow and a plastic bag if we throw up.

However, the returned bus, was in poor condition. The villagers a.k.a passengers brought in onto the bus, everything except animals. Hahaha.

Along the journey, we did stopped a few times, at the highway terminal for a break. Some of locals villagers are selling foods, fruits etc, though it is a very cold midnight, and make us chilled to the bones. Almost 80% of them are selling the same items. Although competitive, none i could see them overtake others, but supporting instead.

I could see through their eyes, how hard their lives are, struggling to earn a single money. But, still they are living their live the best they can.

To be continue...

Your Trip: Free Advises

Welcome to Malaysia.
source: malaysia-map

Someone asked, if you have plan to visit Malaysia (maybe in future) from UK, here are some of my free advises:

i) our local cheap flight, you may subscribe for their latest update/info: http://www.airasia.com
   >> Besides, they have some routes connecting among asian cities.
   >> If you're looking for an adventurous trip, you can hop on overnight train/bus eg esp going to Singapore/Thailand which are next to Malaysia's border.

ii) I am forwarding their latest promotion (if you're interested), refer to below image:
   >> actually, they have frequent promo but, of course with different rates/travel date/places

Click link to: Airasia:Promo

iii) If you plan to come over on July/Aug 2012, pleaseee don't, starting from 21st July till a month onwards. It's fasting month (Ramadhan). Not recommended since you're muslim, must be tiring for touring around, and of course people do perform more religious activities during holy month :)
   >> Lets check our public holidays calendar, to plan your travel date: Malaysia holidays-2012

iv) for hotels to stay, we have a lot of choices. It's just depending on your budget/which location you preferred.
    >> But, i don't think money is an issue for you, since our local currency is away cheaperrrr than yours. 1GBP = 4.8 RM (as of today): Click link to Currency Converter

v) International flight UK-MSIA, you may survey at etihad, qatar airways (transit at bahrain), quite cheaper about rm1-2k than britishairways, MAS (our local flight). But,it still depends on current promo.
   >> straight flight (non-transit) will take you 12-13hours journey...really far far far distances :)
   >> if transit, it will take you almost a day, to reach Kuala Lumpur.

vi) If you plan 1 week vacation here, pleaseee consider 2days off for your return flight (LDN-MSIA / MSIA - LDN), which means you only have 5days of touring around+jetlag sickness...hehe

vii) Pleaseee consider 7hours time difference between LDN-MSIA, which means MSIA is 7hours advance  :)

viii) Simple draft for your itinerary:
    >> Kuala Lumpur (KL) - 1day
         --> http://www.lonelyplanet.com/malaysia/kuala-lumpur
--> capital city of Msia. Enjoy sightseeing, shopping & local food.

--> you may dropping by at Malacca (our historical state) on the way back to KL.

    >> if you wish to go Thailand beaches (Phuket/Koh Phi Phi) - 2day 1night

Cerita bersambung...*peace*

Planning for Europe Trip?

Some friends were asking about my Europe Trip. A lot of questions. Hmmm, why don't I write about it here. Easy for someone else to refer to without me for repeating the same answer, all over again. Hehe. By the way, sharing is caring, ha? ;)

Though, my Europe trip was over a year ago, I'll try to recall as much information that would helpful as for your guidance. It might not so complete, but feel free to ask if you have further queries.

Here we go. Will try to make it simple in words but hopefully it worth for your understanding/information. Stay tune, ya!

First of all:
i) List down of all your dream places to visit.
   >> Let's check from this website: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/europe
   >> it tells you what's the best attractions at those countries which you're looking/interested for

You might need to read a lot from websites to gather related information.
No excuses for self planning trip, unless you pay for travel agency to do it for you. Enjoy surfing! Hehe.

The best is, they recommend you of the top picks for Europe's best travel destination

ii) Let's check what is the best weather season to visit those places.
   >> This might helps you to decide on your flights (booking) departure/arrival, itinerary etc.
  >> Bear on mind, some places may not available during certain season. Eg: Tulips' largest park in Holland, it only open during spring (Mar to May) every year, otherwise you'll miss the visit.

iii) Once you've decided on your list of places to visit, then let's check on the accommodation (transportation and hostel/budget hotel) offers.

Transportation:
  >> Each places have their own preferred public transport; some might convenient to use cheap flights, trains or even by bus. It depending on your budget allocation ($$) of how much the costs will incur.
   >> This site will help to get your choices of transportation: http://www.backpackeurope.com/trans/

    >> I would like to recommend these well known public transports in Europe, pls check at their websites for more details on connecting routes:
         a) Cheap flights:
              - ryanair: http://www.ryanair.com/en
              - easyjet: http://www.easyjet.com/EN
Note: ryanair offers the most routes compared to easyjet, and the price is also slightly
cheaper. Their promo always in 3 months prior departure date. Do check more often to get the
           best price!
But, please do double checking on the hidden charges especially on additional luggage
cost. Pls check also for departure/arrival airport. Mostly, the cheaper prices are contributed by
the location of the airport, where are outskirts from the city center. There will be additional
transport costs for bus/train from airport to city center.
Ryanair is extremely particular on your cabin luggage's weight. Pls ensure it's not exceeding the
maximum limit, or else they'll charge you for EUR40/kg extra. Wah!

         b) Train:
             - RailEurope: http://www.raileurope.com.sg/
Note: The prices may varies between high speed trains, night & hotel trains & scenic trains.
Do check for details; routes, availability etc. Some budget travelers would prefer to travel via
night trains to save money on accommodation (hostel/hotel). I'd suggest you to get EuRail
pass for cost savings, this available for non Europe citizen.

Accomodation:
Here are some referral for your consideration. You may check on several websites to compare on prices, locations, availability during your stay, facilities provided, transportation if well connected to travel/walk around, security/safety for yourself & belongings, payment method & flexibility of payment cancellation, and most importantly is check in/check out time. Read through from trip advisor, reviews from other travelers whom might/not recommend you to stay, as to ensure you won't regret it later.

Budget hotels:
     i) Agoda: http://www.agoda.com
     ii) Eurobookings: http://www.eurobookings.com/
     iii) Booking: http://www.booking.com/
     iv)Hotels & Discounts: http://www.hotels-and-discounts.com

Backpackers/Hostel:
     i) HostelWorld: http://www.hostelworld.com/
     ii) BackpackingEurope: http://www.backpackingeurope.com/
